Albion College is a private college founded by Methodists and located in Albion, Michigan; population of about 9000 people. The residential college was founded in 1895 and focuses mainly on Bachelor of Arts degrees, as well as the fine arts. Because it is a residential college, nearly 89% of the 1602 enrolled students live on campus; however there is an expansive off campus program which reaches across to many different countries abroad.
Although the college was founded over 175 years ago, most the college buildings have been renovated to provide the best learning atmosphere for the students. Since 1901 the student body has grown to 1710 from the modest 500 students that enrolled so long ago. Today there about 30 buildings on a campus that stretches for 90 acres. Also on campus are a 340 acre equestrian center and the White house Nature Center, which is a 144 acre nature preserve off the Kalamazoo River.
Needless to say there are many activities for student life on campus. Around 40% of the student body is involved in fraternities or sororities, aside from this there are over 100 clubs created by students to pick from and join. Albion is in the NCAA Division III so there are many athletic activities to pick from as well; purple and gold are the Albion Briton colors. Not only is there an extensive off campus program but there are internships and career support and advice for the students’ next step, whether it be workforce or graduate school. There is also an office of the chaplain to provide any needed spiritual support.
Albion strives to provide a productive and beneficial residential life because it is so closely related to academics in their college. With such a close personal environment it is no wonder they attract stellar students and faculty. Over 95% of the faculty has Ph.D.’s or some other appropriate credential for their field of study. On the average about a third of the incoming freshmen rank in the top 10% of their high school senior class and seven out of ten are in the top 25%. Past renowned guest speakers at the college include, former 1st lady Barbara Bush, Actor James Earl Jones, and Duke Basketball coach and Olympic Men’s Basketball gold medalist “Coach K”, Mike Krzyzewski.
Albion College offers Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.) in anthropology/sociology, art, art history, athletic training, biology, chemistry, communication studies, earth science, economics/management, and English. The average class size is 18, with the student to faculty ratio being about 13 to 1. Some other majors are exercise science, ethnic studies, French, geological sciences, German, history, international studies, mathematics, music, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, public policy, religious studies, Spanish, theatre, TransAmerican Latino/a studies, and women’s and gender studies. They also offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in art and art history.
The off campus program is specifically for juniors and seniors; it requires transfer students to stay on campus for at least 2 semesters before taking part in the program. The college has centers in many different urban areas around the world. In these cities students will experience real workplace dynamics and apply learned skills while completing their internships for participating employers. At this time Albion doesn’t offer distance learning or online courses, but hopefully it will open the doors of the small academic community to remote students sooner than later.
