Antioch’s not-for profit, five-campus system began with Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Overall, Antioch University is founded on principles of rigorous liberal arts education, innovative experiential learning and socially engaged citizenship. The multiple campuses of the University nurture in their students the knowledge, skills and habits of reflection to act as lifelong learners, democratic leaders and global citizens who live lives of meaning and purpose.
Antioch stands out among universities and colleges in Seattle for its exclusive focus on adult learners. The 34-year-old campus purposely has remained small, with about 900 students. Originally, it was a creation of Antioch West, a “University Without Walls” experiment on the West Coast initiated by Antioch College Psychology Professor Joe MacFarlane and 30 Antioch College students in 1971. Today, Antioch offers the B.A. in Liberal Studies and Master’s programs in psychology, education, whole systems design, environment and community, management and leadership, communication and organizational development. Additionally, a program for a Doctorate in clinical psychology was launched in 2004. Antioch also offers continuing education programs through its Center for Continuing Education.
Antioch offers a range of Continuing Education courses and workshops to capture students’ interest. Courses fall into 5 subject areas: Education, Nonprofits, Business, Psychology, and Mediation. The Center for Continuing Education also offers certificate programs in Case Management: Best Practices & Standards, Coaching, Educational Technology & Online Learning, and Professional Mediation.
The Educational Technology & Online Learning Certificate program is an online, four-course program offered in partnership with the Education Development Center. It provides capacity-building professional development for organizations to provide online learning programs for teachers, administrators, and students. From this program, students will learn to identify the most important recent development in educational technology and online learning, design and deliver two or more standards-based online courses, design an online professional development program for teachers, and more. This unique online degree opportunity has attracted students from all over the world to Antioch University Seattle.
Antioch also offers two programs for younger students interested in taking a gap year between high school and college, or integrating study abroad into their college studies. LeapNow is a study abroad program that works with students ages 18 to 24 while Antioch Education Abroad is open to any student currently in college who wishes to participate in a study abroad program.
