California Institute of Integral Studies, founded in 1968, is located in the heart of San Francisco, CA. CIIS was founded with the intention of bridging traditional Western philosophy and culture with that of the Eastern philosophies such as Buddhism and Taoism. Their East-West Psychology program is one of the only programs of its kind anywhere in the country. The school boasts small class sizes, internationally acclaimed professors, and cutting edge programs in psychology, consciousness, and transformation. The international and alternative setting of San Francisco complements this type of study very well. The school offers distance learning in the graduate division of programs. CIIS prepares its students to pursue careers in community mental health, private practice therapy and counseling, work in non-profit organizations and community initiatives, and much more. The study of many paths of spirituality is integrated into the coursework.

California Institute of Integral Studies was one of the first schools to offer graduate programs through distance learning. Their programs are innovative and are increasingly attracting a diverse, international student population. The school emphasizes individual study within the context of participation with other students taking the same courses online. Currently the school offers online degree programs at the Master’s level in Transformative Leadership and a Ph.D. in Transformative Studies. There are many other courses that students can take online, however you must apply to be a student first and check with the registrar about which courses are available to you through distance learning. CIIS has one Bachelor’s Degree, called the Bachelor of Arts Completion Program.

The graduate division is diverse, primarily with a focus in education relating to psychology and religion/spirituality. The Master of Arts Program offers degrees in Asian and Comparative Studies, Cultural Anthropology and Social Transformation, East-West Psychology, Integrative Health Studies, Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness, Transformative Leadership (only offered online), and Women’s Spirituality. Master’s in Psychology degrees are awarded in five areas: Community Mental Health, Drama Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Integral Counseling Psychology, and Somatic Psychology. The Master of Fine Arts Programs include Creative Inquiry, Interdisciplinary Arts, Writing and Consciousness, and the Ph.D. degree can be earned in Asian and Comparative Studies, East-West Psychology, Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Transformative Studies (online only), and Women’s Spirituality. CIIS also offers a Psy.D. degree in Clinical Psychology. A Professional Certificate in East-West Psychology and Spiritual Counseling is another option for professionals looking to expand their knowledge and experience.

Undergraduate tuition at CIIS is $7,380 per semester. For Master’s level students it is $10,265 and as well as the additional thesis proposal writing fee of $1,995, and the thesis completion fee in the same amount. Doctoral students pay $11,660 per semester and have various other fees related to their dissertation proposals and completions. Students at CIIS have excellent faculty to work with on their graduate research, they will be side by side with the cutting edge leaders in their chosen research areas.
