California State University Channel Islands, also known as CSUCI or just CI, is interestingly not actually located in the Channel Islands.It is in Camarillo, CA, the midpoint between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Camarillo is at the center of a thriving economic center where biotechnology, industry and agriculture offer students wanting to stay in the area work possibilities. California State University Channel Island has small class sizes and highly esteemed faculty, so much that it is often compared to having a private educational experience. The University is the last of the twenty-three California State Universities to be created and its location and campus were originally a state mental hospital. Camarillo State Mental Hospital has been the setting for many films, as well as music videos, giving it a local fame.
The University offers distance learning Master’s Degrees through the Extended Education Program which is part of the California State University system. Students can pursue a Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Master of Science Biotechnology/Master of Business Administration dual degree, Master of Science in Mathematics, Master of Science in Computer Science, and Master of Arts in Education. CI has twenty-two majors in the undergraduate program, and they are as follows: Applied Physics, Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Chicano Studies, Communication, Computer Science, Early Childhood Studies, Economics, English, Enviornmental Science and Resource Management, History, Information Technology, Liberal Studies, Mathematics, Nursing, Performing Arts, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Spanish. They also offer teaching credential programs in Administrative Services, Education Specialists Mild/Moderate Level I and II, Multiple Subject and Single Subject in Mathematics, Science, English and History/Social Studies.
Students can augment their major course of study with a minor in Anthropology, Applied Physics, Art, Asian Pacific Studies, Biology, Business Management, Chemistry, Chicano/a Studies, Communications, Computer Game Design and Development, Computer Science, Developmental Psychology, Economics, English, Environmental Studies and Resource Management, Global Studies, History, Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Spanish. Master’s Programs include an Master of Arts in Education, as well as one in English. The Master of Business Administration and the Master of Science programs are available only through distance learning technologies offered through Extended Education and many not be taken on campus in a classroom.
The admission rate at Cal State Channel Islands is about fifty-three percent, with most incoming freshmen scoring at least 1100 on their SAT’s. The student retention rate for the full time student population of 3,783 is around seventy-eight percent. Students can apply for Federal Grants, State Grants, Student Education Loans, and Scholarships. Some of the scholarships available are the President’s Scholar Program, the CSU Edison Transfer Scholarship Program, CSU Systemwide Scholarships, and the Governor’s Scholarship Program. California State University Channel Island also has study abroad programs, which have a different tuition and financial aid standard.
