California State University Long Beach Distance Learning

California State University Long Beach, the second largest University in the California State system, is also known as Cal State Long Beach, Long Beach State, CSULB, LBSU, or “The Beach.” It is also the third largest University in the state of California. The campus is located on the coastline of Southeastern Los Angeles County, just outside of Orange County. It is approximately twenty miles from downtown Los Angeles. Long Beach is the second largest city in Los Angeles County, with a population of just under 500,000. It is home to the Port of Long Beach, one of the largest shipping ports in the world, as well as a large oil industry, and a booming aerospace technology industry.

Long Beach State has recently been recognized with many awards and acknowledgments, including a number three ranking in “America’s Best Value Colleges” by the Princeton Review. This ranking takes into consideration several factors such as academic standards, class sizes, cost of tuition and other fees, how well the school assists students in obtaining financial aid, and student borrowing. Cal State Long Beach is the only University in the California State system to receive this ranking. According to U.S. News and World Reports “America’s Best Colleges Guide,” Long Beach State is one of the top five Master’s degree granting, public Universities on the West Coast. The school has received this ranking every single year since 2005.

CSULB, has seven colleges that comprise its academic departments: College of the Arts, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Health and Human Services, College of Liberal Arts, and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. They offer over eighty undergraduate programs, sixty-seven Master’s degrees, and three Ph.D. programs. Cal State Long Beach boasts of an extremely diverse student population, with great academics, as well as the exciting Los Angeles and beach landscape.

They offer many undergraduate courses through distance learning technologies, as well as a Master’s in Public Administration entirely online. They are most well known for having more art and design programs than any other public University in the United States. They also have a very prestigious music program, as well as competitive programs in Film, Dance, Design, Finance, Information Systems, Business, Management, Engineering, Aerospace Studies, Food Science, Gerentology, Public Policy and Administration, and Social Work. Their Liberal Arts College offers interesting and unique programs such as Environmental Science and Policy, Peace Studies, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Chicano Studies, American Indian Studies, Human Development, and International Studies.

The total tuition and fees is markedly different for California State residents and other U.S. residents, with Californians paying $3,392 per semester, while others pay $13,562. The University Financial Aid office is available to assist students in finding loans, grants, work-study employment, and scholarships that will suit each student’s needs. Scholarships offered include CSU Scholarship Program for Future Scholars, CSULB Academic Scholarship, California Student Aid Commission Scholarships, and they offer a wide variety of Community-Based scholarships to help Long Beach residents attend University. Overall, CSULB is a great deal.

    I am a senior merchandise manager working in garment field more than 25 years. I want to get a degree related to merchandising or business. As I am working in Hong Kong, I would like to take a long distance course in CSULB as my son is studying there.
