Canisius College Distance Learning

Canisius College, located in Buffalo, NY, was founded in 1870 by Jesuits from Germany, and is named after Saint Peter Canisius. It is a private Roman Catholic College, and one of twenty-eight educational institutions that are part of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Buffalo, NY, is located in the northern part of upstate New York, close to the Canadian border near Niagara Falls. It is New York State’s second largest city, after New York City. There are many colleges and universities within the city limits, and the largest of the SUNY schools is located there, Buffalo State. Buffalo is known as “The City of Trees,” and is home to many parks and green spaces, as well as being situated between Lake Erie, and the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers. Because of its many waterways, it has always been a hub for commercial and trade activity. It is known for its food, architecture, art, music, nightlife, and festivals.

Canisius College offers more than seventy majors, minors and certificate programs. The College is organized into three main components: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Richard J. Wehle School of Business, and the School of Education and Human Services. Canisius has received accreditation through numerous organizations such as the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, The Council for the Education of the Deaf, The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, and many others. Canisius was ranked as number twenty in the category “Regional Schools” for the Northern Region by U.S. News and World Report, and Kaplan listed it as one of “America’s 367 Most Interesting Schools.”

Canisius has one completely online degree program, which is a Master of Science in Physical Education. They offer many other online courses, but no other complete program through distance learning. The program is designed for professionals who already have education credentials and are working in the field as coaches or physical education instructors. It meets the licensing requirements for New York State teaching certification, and students from other states must check with the Department and with their own state licensing board offices to see if they could feasibly pursue this option.

The College offers a wide variety of Liberal Arts and Business degree majors and minors, such as Journalism, English, Entrepreneurship, Digital Media Arts, Chemistry, Computer Science and Philosophy. They also offer Pre-Professional Programs including tracks in Pre-Dental Medicine, Pre-Optometric Medicine, and Pre-Podiatric Medicine, as well as Pre-Law, Pre-Pharmacy, and Pre-Veterinary Medicine. They also offer dual degree programs combining Liberal Arts majors with Business degrees, as well as a fashion program in conjunction with the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Canisius has an Honors Program, a Military Science/Reserve Officer Training Program, ROTC, and many study abroad options.

Undergraduate tuition is approximately $828 per credit hour, and graduate education costs $694 per academic unit. New York State has a tuition assistance program, and other financial aid options are federal and state loans, grants, scholarships, workstudy, and other employment opportunities. A majority of Canisius students receive some type of aid.
