Central Michigan University Distance Learning

Founded in 1892 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, Central Michigan University (CMU) continues to live up to their pledge to provide students with the opportunity to obtain “degrees of distinction” through on-campus and distance learning degree programs. Originally named Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute, the university was founded in order to provide Michigan with formally trained teachers at a time when most teachers had only an 8th grade education and no formal training! Although Central Michigan Universityhas grown to be the 4th largest public university in Michigan with over 27,000 students, CMU continues to operate under their founding motto of “Sapientia, Virtus, Amicitia” meaning “wisdom, virtue, and friendship” as evidenced by their awards, accomplishments and prestige.

Additionally, Central Michigan is committed to excellence in distance learning, as evidenced by their rich educational history, high standards, and over 30 years of experience in administering courses and degrees via distance learning. Initially, Central Michigan University sought to bridge the gap between the need for and access to education by providing off-campus locations. Today, CMU Off-Campus consists of 60 locations in the US, Canada, and Mexico, iCentral online, and take-home learning and course packages. Some degrees are hybrid, meaning that they consist of a mixture of online and face-to-face courses at various locations; prospective students will need to look at the specific requirements for their degree to ensure a good fit.

CMU’s online degrees are true to their roots in business and education. Undergraduate degrees include Administration, Integrated Leadership, Psychology, and Community Development, with concentrations offered for each degree. Undergraduate tuition ranges between $348 and $398 per hour. However, this a great deal as on-campus fees and room and board are not an issue. Graduate degrees include Educational Leadership, Educational Technology, Administration, Business Administration, and Nutrition at the master’s level, and Health Administration at the doctoral level. Graduate tuition costs between $459 and $655 per credit hour for a Master’s degree depending on the program, and $850 per credit hour for the Doctorate in Health Administration. The MBA with the SAP Concentration has a tuition rate of $1000 per credit hour. Financial aid is available in the form of grants, scholarship, loans

Central Michigan University also offers bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees at 23 bases across the US for active military, guard, reserve, and their spouses and dependent children. CMU offers these persons a military discount, and this discount is also extended to honorably discharged military and Department of Defense civilian employees; Covered undergraduate programs have a tuition rate of $258 per credit hour, and covered graduate programs have a tuition rate of $280 per hour.

In addition to their commitment to adult learners through distance learning, CMU is an accredited university with a long upheld tradition of excellence. Central Michigan University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and many areas of study have specialized accreditation from national oversight and accrediting organizations. CMU has also received awards such as The Medium School of the Year Award and The Katrina Compassion Award.
