Christian Brothers University, or CBU, is a small Christian liberal arts college located in Memphis, Tennessee, and is the oldest college in the city of Memphis. 1,770 students attend the school from a diversity of backgrounds, ethnicities, and religious faiths. While the university is affiliated with the Catholic Church, only 20 percent of students are Catholic and 25 different faiths are represented on campus.
The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is recognized by Tennessee as a teacher training institution. It is ranked among the best Southern universities in the US News and World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” (2011 edition).
While the college offers a traditional full-time degree program, it also offers a Professional Studies program, which is an evening learning program designed for professionals who do not have the time to dedicate to a traditional education but still seek a degree. The program offers Bachelors degree in Accounting, Business, Applied Psychology, Teacher Education, and University Studies.
Courses in the Professional Studies program run 8 weeks, and students can enroll in up to 2 classes during an 8 week term. This will allow students to complete 30 credits per years and complete a Bachelors degree in just four years. However, advanced and successful students may petition to take more credits in order to earn the degree faster.
Classes generally meet once a week for about four hours in the evenings, although Saturday morning classes are sometimes offered. Classes are offered fully online as well, which allows students to take courses on their own time and from the comfort of their own homes.
Admission to the program is relatively simple. All students need to do is fill out an application, send in transcripts, and send a letter of intent to the school. For those with existing credit at another school, CBU accepts transfer credit from most regionally accredited universities, and also has transfer agreements with several schools in the Memphis area. Upon admission, the university will analyze your transcript to determine what courses will transfer and will help you determine the best course of study. There is no distinct timeline to finish the degree, although four years should be sufficient for most students.
If students are unable to transfer credit, they may also attempt to take the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam in the subject area or petition to challenge the exam for a course.
Tuition for the 2010-2011 school year for Professional Studies courses is $465 per credit hour, plus some additional nominal fees. However, the school is generous with financial aid, and 91 percent of students receive some sort of aid as of 2010. The average financial aid award was over $15,000.
In conclusion, CBU is an excellent choice for those looking to earn a part time degree in a variety of fields in the Memphis area. Its online options make it ideal for those with even the busiest schedules.
