Concordia University, located in Portland, Oregon, is a private, Christian, liberal arts university. Established in 1905 as a four-year academy, Concordia was founded to educate pastors and school teachers for the Lutheran Church Missouri-Synod. Now affiliated with the Concordia University System, a consortium of 10 universities in the U.S., Concordia welcomes students of all backgrounds and religions while continuing to integrate faith into every aspect of learning, service, and life.

Its continuing mission is to prepare leaders to transform society. To accomplish this goal, Concordia employs a teaching staff composed of more than 50 instructors, each of whom holds a Master of Education or a Doctoral degree. The teachers combine their formal education with real-world experience to instill critical thinking skills in their students.

Concordia offers 25 undergraduate majors to its 2,500 students. With an average class size of 20 students, there is ample opportunity for student-teacher interaction. If studying abroad interests you, Concordia has 20 countries and over 50 cities to choose from, in semester and year-long programs.

And don’t forget athletics. If men’s and women’s basketball, golf, track and field, and soccer don’t pique your interest, there are also men’s baseball and women’s softball and volleyball to recharge your batteries after hours of study. Looking for a calmer way to spend a free weekend? Portland’s sights include the Alberta Arts District, the Columbia River Gorge, Forest Park, and of course, the Oregon Coast itself.

The University is continuing its proud tradition of providing superior teachings in the field of education by expanding its curriculum to include distance learning. The accelerated Master of Education program allows students the opportunity to earn a Master’s Degree online in one year. Concordia also offers pre-professional programs, professional church work programs, undergraduate degrees in education, and both undergraduate and master degrees in business. Many undergraduate courses are also available online, to help students who are under time constraints. Concordia is regionally accredited, so enrolled students are eligible for federal financial aid.

Concordia  provides a challenging learning environment for its students, where “spirited intellectual inquiry strengthens our commitment to justice, compassion, and moral integrity.” To complement its rigorous academic programs, Concordia supports its students through the use of its  “cohort” system. In the cohort system, students stay with the same learning group throughout their tenure at the University, to foster deeper relationships among students and greater comprehension of the subject matter. Partially as a result of this unique program, Concordia’s graduation rate is over 85%.

Concordia is committed to its online students, as well. Orientation includes an introduction to Blackboard, the primary course delivery platform for Concordia University’s online degree programs. In addition, the University has set up a blog with articles designed to assist distance learners, including a post setting forth the technology online students will need. An Online Learning Toolbox, with detailed information the conscientious learner can use to his benefit, and a FAQ section provide further aid.
