Elon University is a choosy, independent, private school known as a national example for interactive learning and excellence in the liberal arts, sciences, and professional programs. Elon’s diverse and intellectual community is accentuated by active student involvement with professors that are dedicated to exceptional teaching and scholarly achievements. The coursework is rooted in traditional liberal arts and sciences and given heightened regard thanks to the exquisite professional and graduate programs. Students attending Elon University apply what they learn while becoming global citizens and informed leaders who are inspired to act for the benefit of others. The school has the largest undergraduate study abroad program in the United States than any other school offering Master’s degrees. It was also named one of the top three American universities for community service by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Campus life at Elon University is full of interesting things to do. Campus recreation includes intramurals, sports clubs, outdoor recreation, group exercise, a fitness center, aquatics, and a driving range. Student organizations include many Greek clubs such as Alpha Psi Omega, Alpha Xi Delta, and Beta Alpha Psi. Other organizations include the Association for Computing Machinery, Catholic Campus Ministry, and Elon Feminist for Equality Change and Transformation (EFFECT). The Center for Leadership at Elon allows students to sharpen their leadership skills and meet colleagues with similar beliefs. The Center offers a four-year Isabella Cannon Leadership Program that challenges fellows to create a public service project that will be sustained long after graduation.
Academics at Elon University is comprised of five schools: the Elon College of Arts and Sciences, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, the School of Communications, the School of Education, and the School of Law. Other and special programs include fellows academic and scholarship programs, general studies, graduate programs, health and human performance, and leisure and sport management. Some academic resources include Belk Library, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, the Lumen Prize, and Phi Beta Kappa at Elon. Majors include Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Dance Performance and Choreography (BFA), and Environmental and Ecological Science. Additional minors and interdisciplinary programs include African/African-American Studies, Geographic Information Systems, Professional Writing Studies, and Women’s Studies/Gender Studies. The two pre-professional programs offered at Elon are Pre-law and Pre-medical.
Web-based online courses make up Elon University’s distance learning program. The school offers over 40 courses for undergraduates during the Summer Session I. Courses are taught entirely over the internet, they equal the same number of credit hours as their campus counterparts, and they encourage conversation amongst peers as well as faculty. Elon uses Blackboard software as their course management system. Blackboard allows for collaborative learning with email, message boards, instant messaging, and online exams support. Courses that are offered online include Principles of Financial Accounting, Principles of Managerial Accounting, Anthropology of Tourism, and Principles of Management and Organizational Behavior.
