Online Courses
Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs)
What is an online
course and how does it work?
Online courses are offered via the Internet.
At Florida Community College at Jacksonville, online courses are
offered through the Blackboard learning management systems.
A learning management system is an Internet-based software platform
that you use to take an online course. It contains tools for distance
learning, such as a hyperlinked syllabus, course content and notes,
a Bulletin Board system and chat for collaboration and communication,
assignment drop boxes, interactive quizzes and exams, and much
more! All online courses are instructor-led and use the same schedule
as on-campus courses. This means that you may have midterm and
final exams, papers, and discussion assignments to complete with
deadlines. Online instructors use a variety of learning methods
and assignments in online courses just as they do in an on-campus
class.
Will an online course appear
on an official transcript?
Yes. Your college transcript will not
look any different. There is no indication on the transcript as
to whether the courses were taken on-campus or online.
What if I have questions
about the course material?
You should visit the instructor's web page for
information about specific course requirements. Instructor Web
pages are also listed at the Distance
Learning Web Site. Also, check your schedule in Artemis
for special notes and instructions that may have been updated.
Can I use
financial aid to pay for an online course?
Financial Aid and Military Tuition assistance
can be used for college credit distance learning courses. More
information can be obtained from the Financial
Aid Office.
How do I
register for an online course?
Registration for Distance
Learning courses is the same process as registering for any other
Florida Community College college-credit course. Class schedules
and registration information are available at: http://www.fccj.edu/schedules/.
If you are not currently a Florida Community College at Jacksonville
student, you will need to apply for admission to the college before
registering for classes. Please visit the Admissions
Web site for more information.
You can register in person,
via the U.S. Postal Service, over the phone (Touchtone registration),
or over the internet using Artemis.

each term.
Can I
take the online course if I live outside of the Jacksonville area?
Most of our online courses are "world
wide ready," meaning that all coursework, testing and orientations
are conducted online. However, some courses require periodic on-campus
meetings for labs, lectures, or testing. Please be sure to check
the schedule in Artemis
carefully before you register for an online course, as sometimes
requirements may have changed since the printing of the credit
schedule.
Where do I buy my books?
Required textbooks and study guides are available
at all campus bookstores. Be sure to call individual bookstores
to check availability. You can also order your textbooks online
at the E-Follett
Web page.
Once I've
registered, how do I know how and when to access my course?
All online courses are accessed via a
username and password that is assigned by the instructor to you.
Prior to the official first day of courses, you must visit your
instructor's Web page for specific information about the course
in which you are registered, or e-mail the instructor. Instructor
web pages are listed in the Online
Course Section of the Distance Learning Web Site, or in the
Schedule Notes in Artemis.
Please note that course access will not be given prior to the
official first day of classes.
Do any online
course subjects require completion of an entry-level placement
test prior to registering?
Yes. Online courses are just like on-campus
courses in terms of assignments, prerequisites and placement
tests. English, mathematics and humanities require entry-level
placement tests.
Can I do the
coursework for an online course at my own pace?
All online courses operate on the same schedule
as on-campus courses. This means that you may have midterm and
final exams, papers, and discussion assignments to complete with
deadlines. Online instructors use a variety of learning methods
and assignments in online courses just as they do in an on-campus
class.
How does
testing work in an online course?
In the majority of classes, testing is done
online in a password-protected environment. Some courses, however,
require on-campus testing. For details, refer to the Schedule
Notes in Artemis for the class for which you are registering,
or link to the instructor's home page. Remote testing is
available for students out of the First Coast area.
May I take an online
course if I am receiving veterans benefits?
According to VA regulations, online courses
may be taken as part of the course load for which students are
receiving VA benefits. Veterans should refer to the Student Services
section, Veteran Affairs, in the catalog for information. Students
may also contact Veteran Affairs located in the Enrollment Services
Office on each campus.

How do you communicate
with the instructor and other students in an online course?
The learning management
systems used for online courses have various communication
tools for students and faculty to interact. Communication in an
online course may be synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous
communication is real-time, such as "Chat," and if the
instructor chooses to utilize this tool, then you may be required
to be logged onto your computer at a specific time to chat with
the instructor and your fellow classmates. Asynchronous communication
is not real-time, such as Bulletin Board systems (BBS) and e-mail.
All online courses utilize the asynchronous tools BBS and e-mail.
