Frostburg State University Distance Learning

Frostburg State University is a four year school located in Frostburg, Maryland. It is a part of the University system of Maryland, and was founded in 1898. It went through several name changes until 1987, where it became known as what it is today. Frostburg State hold accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and many of the specific departmental programs hold separate and additional accreditations, such as the College of Education’s teacher education programs. Frostburg State University has courses that are available to students for distance and online learning. They may take these courses after taking an orientation through the University. The school does not offer any specific degree programs solely online at this time, but they may begin to do so as more higher education becomes available in this way. Frostburg has a satellite camps at Hagerstown as well.

The University has three major colleges, The College of Business, The College of Education, and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Of all the programs it offers, the business programs are the most acclaimed. Frostburg’s business school is accredited by the AACSB, which is a prestigious accrediting board that less than thirty-three percent of business programs can claim having approval through. It is considered to be one of the highest standards of excellence a business school can achieve. They also have some rare academic programs such as Adventure Sports, and Ethnobotany. There are forty-five undergraduate majors to choose from overall, seventeen graduate degree options, many certificate courses of study, and pre-professional options as well. The most popular majors at Frostburg include Business, Marketing, Education, Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, Parks and Recreation, Visual and Performing Arts, Psychology, Security and Protective Services, and English.

Online courses are offered throughout the academic calendar, and Frostburg offers a special Intersession, which means that students can take courses online taught by University faculty to earn course credit while they are on Winter Break. This is a unique approach to online learning. Online courses for Intersession and the regular semester schedule vary in availability, and students can check their online accounts to find updated information. Some sample course listing are as follows: Managerial Accounting, Human Biology and the Environment, Advanced Computer Applications in Business, Introduction to Computer Science, Principles of Microeconomics, Current Issues in Special Education, Teaching in the Distance Learning Classroom, Business Writing, Technical Writing, Second Language Acquisition, Human Geography, The Science of Happiness, Power and Control of American Education, Business Ethics, Principles of Marketing, and Music Fundamentals. Students from any degree major can participate in Intersession and even potentially graduate in less than four years.

Tuition and fees for a Maryland State resident are estimated at $17,132 per academic year. Out of state students can expect to pay $23,488. Many students at Frostburg receive some type of aid, over thirty-million dollars was awarded to students in the 2010 academic school year. Student loans, Federal Aid, State Aid and private loans are a common source of financial assistance for Frostburg students.
