Gannon University is a private Catholic university granting degrees from the associate’s level to the docotral level. It is located in Erie, Pennsylvania, and has about 4,230 enrollees in its classrooms. Erie, Pennsylvania is the fourth largest city in the state and is located on the shore of Lake Erie. The city has approximately 100,000 inhabitants and is considered as part of the Erie Metropolitan Area with 280,000. Erie resides in close proximity to metropolitan areas Cleveland, Ohio, Buffalo, New York, and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Its primary economy relies on heavy industry and manufacturing, although other industries are on the rise there, such as healthcare, education, and even tourism. Erie has been named “Emerald City” and it is famous for the Presque Isle State Park, and the Presque Isle Casino, both major tourist attractions.
Gannon’s academic departments hold appropriate accreditations, and the school is ranked high by several publications, including “America’s Best Colleges 2010” published by U.S. News and World Report for the northern region, in the category of Master’s Universities. Only nine other schools were selected for this relatively new category of recognition. Gannon has two foundational programs, The Core of Discovery, which is the general liberal arts core curriculum, and Lifecore, which is participatory and exploratory through out of the classroom events and activities. Gannon boasts eighteen athletic teams in the NCAA Division II level.
None of the academic programs at Gannon are available entirely online, however many courses are. Many of the Criminal Justice courses are offered online, and students can check with their departments to see what classes are available semester to semester. Gannon University has three colleges and six schools. The College of Engineering and Business houses the Dahlkemper School of Business, and the School of Engineering and Computer Science. The College of Humanities, Education and Social Science hosts the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Education, and the Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences breaks down into the School of Health Professions and the School of Sciences. Popular degree programs are Accounting, Management, Marketing, Business Administraiotn, Bioinformatics, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Communication Arts, Theatre, and Nursing.
Gannon University offers many pre-professional programs to the undergraduate student body. Available degree options in this area are: Pre-Chiropractic, Pre-Dental, Pre-Medical, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Podiatry, and Pre-Veterinary. This wide range of training options prepares students for a variety of medical post-graduate study. Certificate programs are also available in Nursing, and Accelerated and Cooperative Medical Programs in Osteopathic Medicine, Allopathic Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine are options as well.
