Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis is the flagship campus of the merger between Indiana University branches and Purdue University branches. The university has been ranked #8 among the Best Public Colleges in the Midwest according to the U.S. News and World Report. Students come from all over the United States, all 50, and over 120 different countries internationally to study at this public research university. The focus of their academic programs are to provide undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, professional certifications, and other workforce bridges, such as internships.
Both of the universities provided well-developed programs in operation before the two decided to combine their efforts. The partnership was formed in 1969 in an effort to merge all of the schools under Indiana and Purdue’s operations. The project saw its first days of success as the Indiana Purdue Foundation in Fort Wayne established a combined campus which is now known as Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne. Soon after, the joint trustees began to zip up the rest of the locations in order to create more opportunity for either campus’ students and take their offerings to a new level. Today the network has become fully integrated with the Indiana University System and offers a strong network of curriculum online as a result.
Online programs offered at IUPUI are offered as extensions of on-campus courses and also in conjunction with Indiana University’s School of Continuing Studies. The online branch specific to IUPUI is called the Community Learning Network. Students living near campus or in the state of Indiana usually do not have to approach campus but for 3 or 4 times in a semester. Out of state students can combat this on-campus obligation by arranging to have tests proctored. All of the courses offered by CLN are asynchronous and can therefore be arranged in any which way the student sees best fit.
Students can pursue courses in a variety of majors that can supplement almost any degree, making CLN an excellent opportunity to root out repetitive, costly coursework that sometimes can discourage a student from a degree they truly desire. Majors include, but are not limited to, Business, Economics, English, Geology, Art, Physical Education, and Music. Some course titles offered are Personal Law, Introduction to Macroeconomics, Art Appreciation, Oceanography, Personal Health, History of Rock & Roll: 70’s – 80’s, and Child & Adolescent Psychology.
Other courses and certifications are offered, such as in the realm of Computer Science, which equips students to enter into an Information Technology profession. There is also individual schools devoted to each field, like the IUPUI School of Public and Environmental Affairs. These are all just the courses offered by IUPUI, there is a sea of opportunities available in the entire Indiana College Network.
