Jacksonville State University is a regional, public coeducational university located in Jacksonville, Alabama. In 1883, Alabama Legislature created a state normal school by signing it into law via a bill. The school opened with only three instructors using just a few acres and a brick building. The normal school continued its operations until 1930 when it was revamped and renamed Jacksonville State Teachers College, and in 1935 the college became regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The title was changed once again to Jacksonville State College when a master of arts in elementary education was conferred in 1957. Then the campus was elevated to the university level with a complimentary board of trustees delivered by the state.
Jacksonville State University provides a growing distance learning program with expanding educational opportunities in distance education in graduate and undergraduate fields. The university even hosts video conferencing for instruction on the go. Of course, the quality of education in JSU’s distance education programs receive the same attention and quality instruction as on-campus courses.
Students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Business/Management, Emergency Management with a minor in Homeland Security, Emergency Management, and Family & Consumer Sciences with concentration in Child Development. A Master of Science is available in fields like Computer Systems and Software Design, Education in Library Media, Emergency Management, Business Administration, Physical Education, and Nursing. Graduate Certificates are also available in Emergency Management, Geographical Information Systems, and Nursing Education.
Jacksonville State University strives to meet the needs of all students. A good expanse of educational tools have made this goal possible to achieve over the internet for distance learners. Greater flexibility allows the university to select from all different pools of study.
With over 9,000 students approaching the ranks of 10,000 and a student to faculty ratio of 20 to 1, students can expect a more traditional style of college education where students are taught by the masses and thusly receive just as good an education as the next student. Tuition is very affordable at 9,120$ per year for full-time students coming from outside the state, and 380$ per credit hour part-time. The university has been able to provide scholarships and institutional aid, but more students participate in federal grants, such as FAFSA and find success in doing so. In summary, the strong majority of students are receiving some form of financial aid.
Students can choose from individual courses or complete programs. Jacksonville State is always expanding its horizons and can only do so by producing a quality education for every student that wants to participate.
