Claiming the coveted title as “The Pioneer in Online Education,” Jones International University (JIU) has a firm foundation in providing quality degrees in Business and Education through innovative distance learning methods. Glenn R. Jones, the founder and Chancellor of JIU, combined his knowledge and power in the cable television industry with his “desire to democratize education” to found Mind Extension University, also known as ME/U, in 1987. ME/U was a cable channel that offered K-12 education courses over the television. At that time, combining technology, communications, and education was a leap for the distance learning industry, as distance learning courses were often taken through mail correspondence.
In 1993, Glenn R. Jones decided to take advantage of another technical advance, the internet. He founded Jones International University, and began offering distance learning degrees entirely online. In 1999, Jones International University became the first online university to be accredited by the prestigious Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Jones International University continues to maintain its accreditation with the HLC and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. As prospective students can see, JIU has a long tradition of offering quality, accessible degrees through the latest advances in distance learning technology.
