Founded 50 years ago in Boca Raton, Florida, Lynn University is an accredited 4 year residential school that also has a well-established and respected online degree program. The campus itself is beautiful, from what I hear. I’ve never stepped foot on the campus, even though I matriculated there. I am a Lynn University Fighting Knight, having received my Bachelor’s Degree through their distance learning program.
Lynn offers degrees both undergraduate and graduate (as well as certification in emergency planning). For a Bachelors of Science, the University has programs for Psychology, Criminal Justice, Hospitality Management, and General Management. Criminal Justice courses are also offered for the Masters of Science, as well as an Emergency Planning Masters degree.
The Business Administration program is strong at Lynn, and offers five different fields of study for the Masters (or MBA) : Marketing, Hospitality Management, Aviation Management, International Business, and Financial Valuation and Investment Management. Also, there is a distance learning program for the Masters of Education, in School Administration.
One of the benefits of the Lynn distance learning system is the accelerated courses. Classes run for eight weeks, making for short but intense learning experiences, and allowing students to achieve their degree on their own timetable. Each course utilizes homework exercises, essays, tests, and interactive discussion boards.
Distance learning programs are designed to give students the tools they need to achieve their coursework and/or degree, and leaving the rest to them. This allows for much more freedom in terms of when and where a student studies, but also has the down side of not being able to ask questions or get clarification, something much easier with the face-to-face interaction of a classroom.
Lynn University has been offering distance learning degrees for over a decade, and is attuned to how important connectivity is. In my personal experience, I never had to wait a week for a response to a question: instructors and administrators alike were always responsive.
I’ve researched a lot of distance learning programs, and studied how they work. But honestly, my only hands-on knowledge of any program is through Lynn University. And for me, it was a positive experience. At the time I was a stay at home dad, and without the option of distance learning I never would have gotten my Bachelor’s.
I felt I was given the resources I needed to get the most out of my education, my instructors were usually easy to communicate with, and an on-line guidance counselor kept me on track for my degree.
This is not an endorsement of the University, just one person’s opinion, saying that this program is worth looking into. As always, there is no substitute for personal research, because no one knows what you need better than you do.
