Meredith College Distance Learning

Meredith College is a women’s college of the liberal arts and is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. As a women’s college, Meredith offers women students the unique opportunity to expand and enlighten themselves in a single-sex environment. Studies have shown that women in a single-sex environment do better academically than their coeducational counterparts. Meredith is also the largest women’s college in the southeastern region of the country. The Princeton Review has classified Meredith College as one of the “Best Southeastern Colleges” and has given the college repeated recognition for this very classification.

Originally Meredith College was chartered as the Baptist Female University in 1891. By 1904, the name had changed to become the Baptist University for Women.  The college remained in operation enrolling students in increasing numbers with each semester until 1909, when the name was formally changed to Meredith College, named for Thomas Meredith, the founder of the weekly Baptist newspaper, the Biblical Recorder.

What’s unique about Meredith College is that the most popular field of study is the general area of Legal Assistant or Paralegal. This and the second most popular field of Business Administration & Management are typically male-dominated areas. Thus, Meredith College has succeeded in its goal of encouraging women to break out of typically female dominated professions, like Nursing. Also popular at Meredith College are the areas of General Psychology, Interior Design, and Health/Medical Preparatory Programs.

Currently, Meredith College doesn’t feature any distance learning programs or online courses, however, the college is apt to offer these soon. As with almost all colleges in the United States, Meredith will feature a selection of courses to give on-campus students more flexibility. In turn that selection of online courses will expand to accommodate distance learning enrollment and eventually gain the capability of satisfying degree prerequisites. In this respect, distance learners can expect opportunities to arise soon from Meredith College.

For undergraduate students, tuition, on a full-time, yearly basis, comes at the cost of $23,500 and, for part-time students, tuition is $615 per credit hour. For graduate students, full-time tuition is $10,260 per year and $570 per credit hour for part-time tuition. As a women’s college, female-only scholarships, merit-based scholarships, and need-based grants are offered each year to 93% of students attending Meredith College. Federal grants account for 1 out of 4 students each semester while state and local grants account for about 8 out of 9 students. In total, all but a handful of students are receiving financial aid.

Meredith College has proved to be a fountain of opportunity for aspiring female students that want to enter the workforce with a degree. In addition, it has been recognized statewide for its quality of academics as well as its rates of success for its students. For distance learners, online courses will be installed soon and, not long after, distance learning degrees should promptly become available.
