The mission of Midway College in Midway, Kentucky is to provide a “living and learning environment” that allows graduates to assume leadership in contemporary society. Originally founded by Dr. L.L. Pinkerton in 1846 as the Kentucky Female Orphan School, the purpose of the school was to help female orphans to gain financial independence through careers as teachers. Dr. Pinkerton founded the school with the help of James Ware Parrish and the Disciples of Christ Christian Church; ties with the church remain today.
Thanks to advances in distance learning technology, Midway College now offers courses and degrees through classic and modern distance learning. Classic distance learning employs satellite campuses and courses taught at non-traditional times to best meet the needs of adult learners. The School for Career Development operates 19 satellite campuses across 16 counties in Kentucky. Modern distance learning employs advances in instructional technology to teach classes online. Midway College Online teaches online courses asynchronously so that students can log in and “attend” class at their convenience.
Midway College Online allows students to earn a liberal arts education from a reputable university without having to relocate or commute to campus. For those who wish to take a blended approach to distance learning, Midway College Online has partnered with The School for Career Development to offer distance learning degrees through a combination of online and on-campus at satellite campus locations. Regardless of the preferred distance learning approach, there are several options at Midway College.
