Oklahoma City University Distance Learning

Oklahoma City University is a United Methodist Church associated school in Oklahoma City that has been in operation since 1904. Located on 104 acres near the state capital, OCU married the Methodist traditions of scholarship and service to the high academic ideals of a major university to create a learning environment that is routinely recognized in college rankings (US News & World Report ranks it in the top tier of Master’s universities in the West… In fact, OCU is the only Oklahoma school in that category).

Referred to as a Master’s university, OCU offers 12 different graduate level programs resulting in Master degrees in everything from Law to Business Administration. In addition, graduates can also pursue PhDs in Nursing at OCU. Undergraduates are offered a wide variety as well, with 60 undergraduate majors to choose from, all taught by professors (no teacher’s assistants here), many of whom are terminally degreed in their fields. There are nine different schools/colleges at OCU, so the 2100 undergrad and 1700 graduate students can pursue anything from Dance or Music (there are individual schools for each, as well as a Theater College) to religious majors (there is both a School of Religion/Graduate Theological Center and a Seminary at the St Paul School of Theology).

Distance learning is alive at Oklahoma City University, especially in the graduate programs with an accelerated schedule for their MBA degree allowing the use of mostly online work to achieve a degree in 60 weeks “with concentrated effort”, although the student has flexibility here and can choose their pace of learning. Classes meet one evening a week and the program meets the same academic standards as traditional MBAs. There is also an International program allowing students to study abroad and get hands on learning while taking courses through Oklahoma City’s Meindes School of Business (with some pre-courses on campus, but much of it done online). The university understands that working students need any help they can get, so they have also begun to offer two online courses in their Nursing Master program that only meet on the first day of class and are then conducted entirely through the Internet (courses are Nursing Informatics and Curriculum Development).

Oklahoma City is an Apple digital campus and although they don’t provide computers for all students like nearby Oklahoma Christian, they do offer many computer labs stocked with Macs and a solid computer infrastructure that runs throughout the school. There are many online and hybrid courses offered and distributed through OCUonline Courses, with not only fully online courses accessible here, but web enhancements to traditional classes like discussions, links, and course materials that enable learning outside the teacher’s range. The campus is completely wireless and even offers iTunesU to all students.

Additional programs for students include study abroad options in over 70 different countries worldwide, pre-professional training in over a dozen different majors (pre-Law, pre-Med, pre-Seminary, pre-Graduate School, etc), and a degree program for working adults allowing accelerated evening/weekend classes resulting in Bachelor degrees in 6 different fields.

With access to the resources of Oklahoma’s capital and almost a century of some of the top graduate and undergraduate schooling in Oklahoma (and much of the western US), Oklahoma City University continues to create the leaders who will serve the world tomorrow.
