Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Distance Learning

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a university of privately funded research that is based in Troy, New York. Rensselaer Polytechnic was founded by Stephen Van Rensselaer in 1824 and is the oldest university of technology in the United States. Students can generally learn about Engineering, the sciences, Architecture, Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences, Management, and Information Technology.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute provides distance education opportunities through what the institute calls Education for Working Professionals. This distance education branch of Rensselaer covers Master’s degrees, select certificates and topics in professional development. Online courses are conducted in a manner that is tailored for each individual student and is not left to the one-size-fits-all unit scheduling for the purposes of fitting a student with their courses.

With that in mind, students have plenty of online courses to choose from when taking their degree to the internet for completion or commencement. Master’s level degrees span the range of the Master of Engineering in Computer & Systems Engineering or in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Microelectronics, a Master of Science, in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Technology, or Management. It should be noted that these programs are 30-40 credits apiece and are meant to expand upon previous, baccalaureate credentials.

Programs at the master’s level are conducted at a simple price plan of $1,410 per credit hour, with no tuition rate for full-time enrollment. The same dues apply to the array of certificate programs and professional development programs offered at Rensselaer. Certificates span the majors of Bioinformatics, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Technology, Innovation & Technology Management, Microelectronics Technology & Design, and Semiconductor Power Device Technology.  Some of these certificates overlap in topic range with the master’s level programs. Certificates are a valid alternative to a Master’s degree of the same subject.

Rensselaer also features a range of training programs that are specific to vocations and applied sciences. Some of the topics covered by Rensselaer’s professional development programs include, but are not limited to Alpha & Gamma Spectroscopy, Engineering Project Management, Principles and Practice of Failure Analysis, and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. These routes of training also are comprised of individual courses that run at the same rate as graduate level and certificate programs.

What is very fortunate and resourceful about Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is that the institute itself, apart from other sources, supplies 97% of its students with non-repayable grants and based in many forms and off of many factors. 15% of the student body receives federal grants each year and almost twice that percentage is receiving tuition assistance from the state and/or local sources.

Distance learning at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is not merely a scattered segment of the institute, it is a core enterprise that is taken seriously and is invested in continually. Online students can tell, as the programs are formulated by the expertise of experience and efficacy, and span the complete requisites a serious degree or certificate requires. Undergraduates may even see the rise of online professional programs in the near future.
