PROCEDURE TWO

2. PROGRAM/SITE DESCRIPTION

a.     The Nature of the Change

History and Development of Distance Learning Courses

Distance learning has been a part of Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) since 1979.  It has been included in the college’s regular self-studies and accreditation reaffirmation activities since that time.   When accreditation was last reaffirmed (1994), FCCJ’s distance learning program was already offering college credit courses through telecourses.  FCCJ continues to offer a robust telecourse program with 33 – 35 courses per semester and over 5,000 enrollments per year since 1992.  FCCJ's distance learning program was selected as a one of ten community college programs in the country to be included in the 1996 League for Innovation Publication,  “Learning Without Limits: Model Distance Learning Programs in Community Colleges". In 1997, the College received the “Telecourse People Award” for the most outstanding telecourse program in the country.

Online courses via the Internet were introduced in 1996.  The first electronic course, “Introduction to Sociology,” was made available to students on the College’s electronic bulletin board.  Online courses have continued to grow in popularity and number since that time.  Live, two-way, interactive television (ITV) courses were first offered in January 2000.  Ten classes were offered that first term, eleven classes are scheduled for the summer terms, and 26 classes have been scheduled for fall.
