Sterling College Distance Learning

Sterling College was originally founded by the Presbyterian Church in 1887 under the name Cooper College. It was renamed Sterling College in 1920. In 2003, the school reopened after it underwent a significant renovation. Cooper Hall is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The mission of Sterling College distance learning is to develop individuals who have an understanding of the Christian faith into thoughtful and creative leaders. They value a strong relationship with the community and church and focus educating people who have a passion for learning and discovering their calling in life. Sterling College strives to be seen as a leading Christian college providing an exceptional liberal arts education.

Sterling College recognizes the demands placed on non-traditional learners. For this they have created a distance learning program that provides a fully accredited curriculum that meets the needs of society. Subject matter is unique and focused on in-demand careers while remaining to be a flexible option for students struggling to continue their education and juggle the demands of work and family.

The Sterling Teacher Education Program (STEP) provides distance learning students with an education that will challenge them academically as well as focus on practical application of the skills acquired. Students who earn their Bachelor of Science in Education will be prepared to get their K-6 teaching license. New distance learning students can join this program every eight weeks.

The Bachelor of Science in History with a concentration on Education 6-12 is a continuation of the STEP distance learning program. Students who earn this degree will be prepared to acquire a 6-12 teaching license which allows graduates to teach in a secondary level classroom. This opens up opportunities for higher salaries and leadership positions. A Bachelor of Science in Math with a concentration on Education 6-12 is another option for distance learning students at Sterling.

After completing the STEP program, graduates also have the option of enrolling in the Professional Studies Licensure distance learning program. This focuses on specialized subject matter such as Biology, Communication, Theater and Arts, Mathematics, English, Art and Design, and Government. Graduates holding a Bachelor’s degree can enroll in one of these courses to expand their area of expertise and further their career in education.

Other distance learning programs offered at Sterling College are Christian Ministries and Theology and Ministry. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministries allows graduates to assume leadership roles in Christian-based establishments such as a church or youth organization. The Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Ministry gives the student the knowledge and resources to build a more profound connection with God and provides a better understanding of bible-based studies.

Students can feel confident that the degree they earn online is as prestigious as any they would get in a traditional classroom setting. Sterling College Online is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Regional Association. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education gives full accreditation to the Sterling Teacher Education Program.
