Summer Playlist

School’s out – and if there’s anything that symbolizes Summer, it’s an iPod and the beach. Now – here’s a compilation of Summer songs so you can truly chill out and relax. You’ve deserved it – it’s been quite a tough year. The second half of the school year was just brutal at best, and we, at Distance Learning, get that. These songs just may be what will become nostalgic to you next year, while you’re thinking of the Summer and all of it’s wonderful fun and chaos.

1. Ben Gibbard – Indian Summer (cover of Kurt Cobain’s original)

  • “We’ll come back for Indian Summer / We’ll come back for Indian Summer / We’ll come back for Indian Summer / And go our separate ways”

2. Best Coast – When I’m With You (granted this one’s lyrics don’t emulate Summer, but if you listen to the beachy sound, you’ll understand why I had to include this song!)

  • “The world is lazy / But you and me / We’re just crazy / So when I’m with you / I have fun / Yeah, when I’m with you / I have fun”

3. Miguel – Do You

  • “What about matinee movies / And pointless secrets / Midnight Summers swim / Private beaches / Rock, paper, scissor, wait! / Best out of three / Momma said the greatest things in life are free”

4. Loving Spoonful – Summer in the City

  • “But at night it’s a different world / Go out and find a girl / Come on, come on / Let’s dance all night / Despite the heat it’ll be alright / And babe, don’t you know it’s a pity / That the days can’t be like the night / In the Summer / In the City / In the Summer / In the City”

5. Grouplove – Tongue Tied (Although I can’t condone the third line!)

  • “Don’t leave me tongue tied / We’ll stay up all night / I’ll get real high / Slumber party, pillow fight / My eyes and your eyes / Like Peter Pan up in the sky / My best friend’s house tonight / Let’s bump the beats til beddy-bye”

6. Blink 182 – First Date

  • “Let’s go / Don’t wait / This night’s almost over / Honest / Let’s make / This night last forever / Forever and ever / Let’s make this last forever”

7. Jake Owen – Anywhere With You

  • “I’ll go anywhere / West Virginia, baby I don’t care / Mexico on a wild hair / Have you ever seen California? / Pick a spot on any old map / I travel light and my bags are packed / Just as long as I’m where you’re at / I’m gonna have a real good view / I’ll go anywhere / Anywhere with you”

8. Yellowcard – Ocean Avenue

  • “We were both 18 and it felt so right / Sleeping all day staying up all night” and of course the chorus,
  • “If I could find you now / Things would get better / We could leave this town / And run forever / Let your waves crash down on me / And take me away”

So there you have it! I tried to grab from most popular genres, including acoustic sets, indie mixes, oldies, country, popular culture, and even music with tones of r&b. These songs, if used correctly, will bring nostalgia for the nights to come. Stay safe!
