Video-Based Courses/Telecourses - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How will a video-based course appear on an official transcript?
It will appear as a regular credit course.

What if I have questions about the course material?
An instructor certified in the course subject matter is assigned to each course and is available to answer your questions via phone or meet with you on campus.

May I tape the lessons and watch them later?
Yes, but check your tape the same day in case you need to record the lesson again. Sometimes there is a technical problem with the broadcast airing, and the video-based lesson may not have aired properly. Therefore your VCR may not have actually recorded the course.

May I watch video-based courses anywhere else?
Yes. All of our libraries have the tapes available, but they must be viewed there. The military base libraries also have some tapes available. Call ahead of time to assure availability.

Some courses are also available for checkout on CDRom.

May I rent the tapes and watch them at home?
Most telecourses may be rented from RMI for an additional fee. For detailed information call RMI at 1.800.745.5480. Note: GLY 1001, MAT 0024, MAT 1033, MGF 1106, POS 2112, and SPC 2600 are not available for rental. You can also contact ACT on the web at http://www.actmedia.org.

What is a course outline or "syllabus?"
A course outline is a document that provides important information about your instructor, course requirements, textbooks, assignments and testing dates.

How will I receive my course outline?
All video-based course outlines are available on the telecouse syllabi page. If you do not have computer access, you can print your outline at any College computer lab or you can call the Distance Learning office at 904.997.2653.

Where do I buy my books?
Required textbooks and study guides are available at all campus bookstores. Be sure to call individual bookstores to check availability. You can also order your textbooks online. If you would like to order your textbooks online, please visit the E-Follett Web page.

Where can I take my video-based course tests?
Students may elect to take their exams with their instructor or at one of the alternate testing sites coordinated by the Distance Learning Office
(not to be confused with the College assessment and testing centers). To assure a test will be at the appropriate location, students must notify the instructor of the testing site in advance by submitting the Test Location Form that is found in the course outline. Please note: Some instructors do not allow students to tests at alternate sites. Check your course outline.

How many tests will I have to take?
Usually, three to four exams are scheduled by the instructor throughout the term, but the number of exams may vary depending on the course. Please note: Some courses do not have tests, but instead work is graded based on written papers and projects. Check your course outline.

May I access the Florida Community College broadcast schedule on the Internet?
Yes, it is located at http://opencampus.fccj.edu/TVS/tv.html

How do I register for a video-based course?
The registration process is the same as those for campus-based and online courses. There is an additional $10 fee for each video-based course. Class schedules and registration information is available at: http://www.fccj.edu/schedules/

Do any video-based course subjects require completion of an entry-level placement test prior to registering?
Yes. English, mathematics and humanities require entry-level placement tests. More information about Assessment and Certification is available at http://www.fccj.org/assessment/.

May I take a video-based course if I am receiving veterans benefits?
According to VA regulations, video-based courses may be taken as part of the course load for which students are receiving VA benefits. Veterans should refer to the Student Services section, Veteran Affairs, in the catalog for information. Students may also contact Veteran Affairs located in the Enrollment Services Office on each campus, or check our Veterans Benefits Website.

How do I get information about my course after office hours?
Recorded announcements and updates are available 24 hours a day by calling the telecourse update line at 904.633.8309. Announcements may also be viewed on the educational access channel, or on the Distance Learning Web page.

Where is the TV department office located and when is it open?
The TV department office is located at Deerwood Center, 9911 Old Baymeadows Road, Room C-1301 (next to the bookstore). Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can reach the office by phone at: 904.997.2669.

What if Florida Community College does not have my correct mailing address?
A lot of College-related information is sent via U.S. mail. Therefore, it is very important that Florida Community College has your correct mailing address. If your mailing address has changed, you can change it yourself in the Artemis system, or contact any campus enrollment services office to provide updated information.

Are there any services provided for disabled students?
Yes. Each campus has a Disabled Student Services Office. Please advise disabled student services at least five working days in advance. It is the responsibility of the student to provide proper documentation of his/her disability.

Please consult with the telecourse instructor and the TV department Office (904.997.2669) before registering. After registering, please call our office to obtain a course outline. Each course is unique and not all video-based courses are available to students living outside of the Jacksonville area.
