The Six Million Dollar Man

A television show from 1974, the Six Million Dollar Man is famous through one of its quotes: “We can rebuild him. We have the technology.” What they were referring to was creating the world’s first bionic man. Bionic meaning, according to Merriam-Webster, having artificial body parts to aide in in human power. Though that television show was made in the 1970s, the members are forecasting that this will be a very real thing in the near twenty, or, by their website’s wordings, by 2020.

They are calling this change “Altered Bodies.” Which makes sense, considering the bodies will be altered to perform at higher levels than the capacity they are able to now. It may be used to save lives or perhaps even refine life for currently healthy peoples.

In 2010, scientists proposed that any human body part can be repaired and restored with artificial body parts. Scientists restored a man’s eye sight using artificial light sensors and microchips. They are going even as far as to implant bionic brains into people, as depicted by the article’s section entitled, “Brain.” Ultimately, this means that they are and will be able to recreate life for those less fortunate. For a professional degree in the matter, you may want to pursue a Bionics in Engineering degree. Although no information on the meeting is given on the Biomedical Engineering Society’s website, information on their past meetings is available. In the 2012 BMES Annual Meeting, several lectures were given on subjects such as cancer technology and cardiovascular and respiratory engineering, as well as the presenting of awards to the esteemed of the Biomedical Engineering community.

It is no wonder that technology is growing at such a rapid pace. Soon, the six million dollar bionic man may be mostly bionic instead of partially. Students who were once hindered by their disabilities with hearing and sight are now finding more accessibility as companies expand their accessibilities. Soon a small majority of them will be hindered by sight and hearing disabilities. Technology is growing. One can choose to either grow with it or fall behind.
