UCLA Distance Learning

Begun in 1919 and the second oldest campus in the UC system, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) is routinely ranked in the tops in the world in academics, faculty awards, and research, as well as an incredible athletic program and vast selection of majors for both undergrads and graduate students.

Fielding a student body the numbers near 40,000, UCLA still manages to maintain a 13:1 faculty student ratio with 2000 or so professors, 98% of which maintain a PhD or equivalent. These well educated professors teach over 200 majors of study (129 undergrad alone), ranging from health sciences to film and television (many tv shows and movies have been shot on campus, which will happen when Hollywood’s in your backyard). Bachelor to doctoral degrees are offered to a multi-ethnic, 419 acre campus of students ready to be trained to be the leaders and global servants of tomorrow.

Health care is a prominent aspect of UCLA, with the David Geffen (?) School of Medicine, as well as schools for Nursing, Dentistry, and Public Health and a Medical Center that operates as a patient care facility and teaching hospital.

Unlike so many of the other schools in the UC system, UCLA does offer an online degree program in Engineering. The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has a Master of Science program designed for “highly qualified, employable engineers who, for various reasons, are not able to attend the on-campus M.S. programs. Students not already enrolled in an MS program can register in the summer for the online MS and are allowed a pretty flexible program when it come to their course of study. The HSSEA MSOL program offers around “ 70 engineering courses… across 9 areas of study from 5 departments” allowing those interested in electrical engineering and those looking for an MS in computer science to participate. Courses are the highest quality and meant to mimic their traditional, on campus equivalents, with more degrees to come.

Realizing the ability of online education to “lower costs and widen access to UC”, it is currently being expanded at UCLA, with more offerings due in the near future. Though there are already some online courses here, as well as Internet components to learning in some classes, the system is still being evaluated (especially at the undergrad level) and the plan is to introduce 40 online undergraduate courses to evaluate their effectiveness (and their cost), knowing that “expanded online education will happen at one of the great research universities…[and they’d like] UC in a leadership role”.

Online registration and library services are offered, with Bruin Online providing a one stop spot for web hosting services, software access and support, and dial up to wireless access.

World renowned research takes place here as well, one of the primary characteristics of any of the University of California schools. Numerous programs are in place, from research in dark matter to work at their lab safety center, all utilizing bright, creative students and experienced, educated faculty to push further into what has only been broached slightly.

Combining top notch athletics, a host of recognized academic programs, world renowned research facilities, and the chance to spot some starts on a daily basis, UCLA sums up the opportunities and diversity of Los Angeles, offering an education that is as unique as the city itself.
