Alabama Distance Learning

AL Distance Learning Association

ACCESS is Alabama’s Distance Learning Organization

Distance learning in Alabama is very popular. The state aimed to have distance learning programs in all high schools starting in the 2009-2010 school year. The plan is to use web-based learning tools in addition to video conferencing. The initiative that started all of this is known as Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide (ACCESS). There will be labs in all high schools that allow students to take courses that are not offered at their particular schools, including advanced, specialty, and AP courses. This is being launched in several waves, as discussed in this article in The Journal in Alabama.

On the university level, the University of Alabama has a College of Continuing Studies that offers distance degree programs, online professional development programs, and safety & health programs. The distance degree programs include arts and sciences, commerce and business administration, communication and information sciences, education, engineering, human environmental sciences, law, nursing, social work, and more.

The University of North Alabama offers distance learning classes for students who have special scheduling needs because of employment, family responsibilities, or geographic distances. In addition to offering an Online Master of Business Administration, the college offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate level courses.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) also offers distance learning in a number of fields. They have a Music Technology Program, Medical School Distance Teaching, Optometry post-graduate opportunities, and a program that focuses on interventions in public health education.

Auburn University runs a Distance Learning and Outreach Technology center for current AU students, continuing education for professionals, and for faculty/staff members. Its goal is to increase access to higher education for the citizens of Alabama and beyond by facilitating the creation and implementation of high-quality, interactive, credit and continuing education distance education courses and programs.
