The bluegrass state of Kentucky is known for its horse racing heritage, mint julips and down home atmosphere. It’s also known for having a great educational system, particularly when it comes to distance learning. Students from high school and college can all complete studies through distance learning. Whether residing in the state or somewhere else in the world, Kentucky’s distance learning programs allow students to sit at a computer and have a great education at their fingertips.
The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education is responsible for improving and coordinating any changes within Kentucky’s postsecondary educational system. Its goal is to see that all students, from high school students to college students to adults needing to complete an education started years ago have the best possible resources available to them at affordable prices. The coucil oversees the state’s colleges as well as out-of-state colleges and institutions licensed to operate in the state.
Kentucky Virtual High School is a program open to all students within the state. Once permission is granted to a student from their school, the student can complete courses at their convenience. Courses taught include traditional ones such as english and math, and also include various electives, languages and advanced placement courses. Classes are also available to students that might not be available in their local district. Courses cost between $165-$330 and are open to homeschooled students, so long as they obtain permission before they register.
Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green has both bachelor’s and master’s degrees available totally online. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in sociology, family and consumer science and interdisciplinary studies. Degrees are also available for students who have attended various technical and vocational schools. Master’s degrees offered include those in criminology, education and business administration. In addition to degrees, various individual courses are offered online for students only needing one or two classes or those just wanting to try something different.
The University of Kentucky offers fans of the wildcats and others the chance to complete master’s degrees online in several subjects. Two programs offered purely online are library and information sciences and rehabilitation counseling. These two programs, while delivering the courses online via digital documents and video capability, may require students to come to campus 2-4 times during the degree program. Many other graduate courses are available for other programs. Degrees in social work, engineering and music instruction can also be taken, but they do require a combination of using online materials and taking the courses at different remote locations throughout the state.
Eastern Kentucky University allows students to earn certificates and degrees ranging from Associate’s to Doctoral. Associate’s degrees can be earned in Paralegal Studies and Police Science, while Bachelor’s are available in Psychology, Corrections, Homeland Security, Occupational Safety and others. Master’s can be earned in such fields as Library Science and Elementary Education, while Doctoral degrees are granted in Occupational Therapy and Nursing.
