Louisiana Distance Learning

The state of Louisiana has much to offer such as great southern food, Mardi Gras, SEC football and many distance learning opportunities from various schools. Whatever a student is looking to study, it can probably be found online at one of the many fine schools in the state.

The Louisiana Distance Learning Association was created to help educators at all levels to gain a better understanding of distance learning and the various technologies avialable for its use. One of the major specializations of this organization is video conferencing. Sometimes educators can feel overwhelmed by the vast amount of technology available to them to use in teaching distance education classes. One aspect of distance education this organization excels in is helping fellow educators locate experts to help them with their distance learning goals. One way they do this is by helping teachers develop what are known as authentic learning classrooms. This term is used to describe a classroom where distance learning is more than just sitting at a desk and listening to a lecture being broadcast or streamed live. It allows students to interact during the class with others in different locations, making the learning experience more interactive with others and thus more authentic.

Louisiana Tech University is leading the way for Louisiana colleges when it comes to distance learning. Offering traditional courses along with leisure classes and workforce training classes, the school makes it easy for students to find a class on nearly any subject imaginable. Traditional online courses include accounting, business administration, english and computer applications. All courses can be taken completely online and are instructor-led. Students with high-speed internet access and e-mail can easily sign up and complete these classes at their own pace. Many students report doing classwork at the office during their lunch hour.

Louisiana State University offers students both credit and non-credit courses online. Certificate programs are available in accounting, allowing those who are already working in the field to gain additional skills for career advancement. Other students can take a variety of classes in African-American studies, Accounting, Economics, Psychology and other areas of interest. Non-credit courses can be completed in english, math and social work. Students can even test-drive an online course by taking an online demo course to see what they think before signing up for the real thing.

Louisiana-Lafayette lets students learn anywhere at anytime. Several undergraduate degrees can be earned online such as a B.S. in Kinesiology or Health Services Administration, a B.A. in Organizational Leadership or an RN to BSN degree for nurses currently employed. Graduate degrees such as Master of Nursing or a Ph.D. in Nursing Practice are available. Certificates can be earned in Nurse Practitioner. Professional Development courses are also offered to educators to allow them to gain continuing education credits and stay certified in their fields. Students taking online courses should have dependable internet access, high-speed capabilities, an up-to-date web browser and current word processing software. A valid e-mail account is also needed before registering for classes.
