Massachusetts Distance Learning

The state of Massachusetts has long been known as a state not afraid to take chances in positions of leadership. This has never been more evident than in the field of distance education. From four-year colleges and universities to community colleges, Massachusetts offers some of the best distance learning opportunities in the nation. No matter what career interests a student, online courses and degrees can be found within the Massachusetts educational system.

The University of Massachusetts-Lowell has one of the best online learning programs in the United States. Home to one of the biggest nonprofit educational programs in the Northeast, the university offers a tremendous selection of online courses for both part and full-time students. Students can choose from individual courses, degrees or certificates in a variety of fields such as Information Technology, Criminal Justice, Education, Science and others. All programs are fully accredited, and the university is working to make higher education affordable and accessible to everyone.

The school offers many interesting undergraduate and graduate certificates online. These include Computer Assisted Manufacturing, Telecommunications, Multimedia Applications and Sleep Disorders. In addition to these programs, the school has gained national and international acclaim for its Online Autism Program, having won a Sloan-C Award for Outstanding Teaching and Learning. Individuals desiring more information about online programs can use e-mail or live text chat to communicate with Online Student Support Specialists.

The Western Massachusetts Distance Learning Network was created to allow students, teachers and administrators in rural school districts access to online educational programs. One of its main goals is to install interactive videoconferencing equipment in rural schools throughout the state, allowing school districts to have more choices in distance education courses. The Network has also developed online courses for use with children in grades K-12 to help schools comply with the No Child Left Behind Act. Professional development courses for teachers, administrators, guidance counselors and school nurses have also been developed to help personnel meet the Highly-Qualified Educator requirement of the No Child Left Behind Act. Thanks to a Rural Utilities Grant, the Network has expanded from its beginnings of four school districts to currently having 18 districts as members.

Northern Essex Community College offers a broad selection of distance learning courses and programs.
