Chartered in 1891 with a motto of “Service”, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro opened a year later on 10-acres to a first class of 198 and a total of three departments: commercial, pedagogy, and domestic science. By 1971, they were one of the 16 college combined to create the UNC college system, growing over the years and gaining recognition both as a “research university with high research activity” and for their work in “community engagement”.
Today the college takes up an additional 200 acres, with a student body of graduates and undergrads that numbers about 17,500. A bit more variety in their educational departments nowadays, the 12 colleges at UNCG include Nursing, Education, and even Nanoscience/Nanotechnology. Degree programs are available in 85 undergraduate degree programs, another 61 Master’s tracts, and 26 PhDs. Of the 1700 courses offered each semester, there is an 17:1 students faculty ratio in class with a third of classes featuring less than 20 students and 90% taught by professors.
UNC Greensboro brings in about 1000 distance learners “from 49 states and 70 countries”, with several completely online graduate degree and certifications, as well as undergraduate completion courses for those who have some higher education already. With a variety of courses for both online and traditional students looking to enhance their education outside of campus, UNC Greensboro has numerous Internet offerings.
For those with at least 60 undergraduate credits (approved, transferrable credits), there are 4 different Bachelor completion programs offered online, including a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, as well as 3 Bachelor of Science programs (Business Administration, Health Studies, and Human Development/Family Studies). For distance learners that have already received a baccalaureate degree, there are 9 Master’s programs online, 3 M.A.s, 3 more M.S. degrees, a M.Ed., a Master of School Administration, and a Master of Library and Information Sciences. Of these, there is a decided slant towards education and nursing, but UNCG has many such stresses both in the classroom and online.
For graduates looking for additional certification, UNCG also provides distance learners with 4 post-baccalaureate certificates, 4 Master’s certificates, and even a post-Master’s in Advanced School Counseling. All online classes, both for those in degree programs and those simply taking online courses are taught in asynchronous formats, with tests and homework assignment due dates just as with traditional courses. The same quality UNCG on campus faculty teach/oversee the online courses, and distance learners are given Internet access to the same library, the campus bookstore, academic assistance, and email services (essential as it represents the main communication between online learners and their teachers).
As a major research university as well, “collaborative scholarship and creative activity enhance quality of life” not just at the college, but in the surrounding community, state, and on a world-wide level. A “source of innovation and leadership meeting social, economic, and environmental challenges” it is a self-described “global university integrating intercultural and international experiences and perspectives into learning, discovery, and service”. Distinguished in 5 different leadership areas, as well as home to a plethora of research institutes (ranging from Biotechnology to Music), it stands to constantly push what we know, looking to educate its student body more effectively, and support the global community outside its doors.
With a distance learning education department that continues to grow, renowned research facilities, and great programs across their very large board, UNC Greensboro stands alongside its fellow Carolina university members as a distinguished member of higher academia.
